January - the sighting of Venus
The sighting of Venus is shared by the history of charting Australia's coastline and Australia's enthusiasm for swimming. Lieutenant James Cook charted the east coast of Australia in 1770 as he made his way to observe the Transit of Venus.
In 1907, Annette Kellermann, known as Australia's 'Diving Venus', successfully advocated in court for swimming as a healthy exercise. This immediately had a profound impact on the desegregation of ocean swimming baths, streamlined costumes and a 'new athleticism for women'.
The first Australian swimming Olympians: Fanny Durack, Mina Whylie and Andrew 'Boy' Charlton, developed the Australian Crawl (freestyle) swimming stroke. They swam in the ocean baths of the east coast. These ocean baths were tidal swimming pools known as 'bogey holes'.
In 1965 access to swimming pools for Aboriginal people was the focus of the Freedom Rides. At Moree, on a hot February day, led by Charles Perkins, the public protest succeeded in letting Aborigines into pools.
By the 1970s, access to a local swimming pool was seen as a standard by which we measured local government facilities. Kellermann's 'coo-ee' as she dived and Charles Perkins' picket of the Moree turnstiles are now part of the Australian identity as we celebrate Australia Day.
