Sassy suffragettes celebrated
Wit, intelligence,
determination and perseverance were key attributes of Australian suffragettes.
Vida Goldstein sparkled as the first woman to stand for Parliament (1903). Louisa Lawson, proprietor
of Dawn: a Journal for Australian Women (1888 - 1905), commented dryly in 1891 that in 100 years surely no-one
would believe that women had to campaign for suffrage. Mary Lee
and others travelled on horses, bullocks and camels to collect
11,000 signatures in South Australia and the Northern Territory. In Victoria, 30,000 women
petitioned Parliament. Aboriginal women were finally granted Commonwealth
suffrage in 1968.
Once elected, Australia's first women politicians,
Edith Cowan and May Holman in Western Australia, devoted
their energies to changing the laws so that women could study law,
and access health services.
While acknowledging the role of the suffragettes, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce, Australia's
first female Governor-General, exemplifies their attributes.
The subsequent capacity for Australian women in the arts, including film, has gifted them with ‘a daring release of design and modernity of style’ that has helped define Australian modernism and Australian women.
