April - awareness of the surreal
April arrives with an awareness of 'a world where incongruity
becomes ... commonplace'. The landscape of ANZAC day is represented
in the surrealist style of 'illogical, unexpected juxtapositions'*.
A new kind of imagery and a fascination with an awareness of paradise
lost and found is showcased in Sighting the Whale, Sydney,
and at Wilin Week, Melbourne. An awareness of the surreal is celebrated
with the POPS parachuting championships, Brisbane, while potters
will connect with the earth and fire of wood kilns in Mittagong,
NSW.
Addressing this 'pervading enigma'* in Australian life is a short
film festival in Sydney, and the 2020 Summit in Canberra with
Cate Blanchett.
