Remembrance Day 2004
Today Australians celebrate Remembrance Day, which commemorates the armistice that ended the First World War in 1918. Each year Australians observe one minute's silence at 11am on 11 November to remember those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Of the Australian population of 5 million, 300,000 young men went to the First World War, and of those, 60,000 died and 156,000 were wounded or taken prisoner.
